Why we built this

In January 2026, the U.S. State Department banned AI face-retouching on passport photos — the exact shortcut a lot of consumer passport-photo tools use to make a face look “camera ready.” Some tools reportedly still do it anyway. IDKit was built as a straightforward answer to that: check a photo against the published spec, crop it correctly, and don't touch the face.

IDKit never retouches faces — no skin-smoothing, no reshaping, nothing altered about how you actually look. That's a description of what IDKit does, not a claim that IDKit holds any official compliance certification. We don't hold one, and no such certification exists for a consumer tool like this.

How it works

IDKit runs entirely on your device. Face detection, cropping, and background replacement all happen locally in your browser, using on-device models — your photo is never uploaded to an IDKit server, before or after processing.

That holds true through checkout too. When you pay, your photo is held in your browser's own local storage for the brief moment you're redirected to Stripe's hosted payment page, then restored the instant you land back on IDKit. It never travels alongside the payment, and it's never sent anywhere else.

What we're not

IDKit is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or acting on behalf of the U.S. Department of State or any other government agency. It is not a law firm and does not provide immigration or legal services. IDKit checks your photo against the published US passport photo specification, but final acceptance of any photo is always at the sole discretion of the agency you submit it to.
